Temporary exhibition: Spain in the Mediterranean. Building the space
As first the Kingdoms of Aragon and Castile, and later unified Spain, expanded into the Western Mediterranean, this meant new relationships of war and peace with the complex world of culture and politics and with Turkish and Berber enemies. And we mustn't forget the constant rivalry with France, the backdrop of Renaissance Europe, the Reformation and the Counterreformation.
We present an important aspect of the historic process which took place from the late 15th to early 18th centuries in the area of the Mediterranean: construction and technology as key elements in the configuration of Mediterranean territory.
Dominating and defending territory and safeguarding communications required many types of buildings: bastions, castles, forts, citadels, watchtowers, arsenals, and so on, many of which still exist and are outstanding works of their kind.
But civil building work also took place, such as urban remodelling, ports, drainage systems, palaces, markets and hospitals.
